Pepperidge Farm, which is owned by Campbell Soup, Inc., ordered the recall after it was informed by one of its suppliers that whey powder used in 4 varieties of its Goldfish Crackers may have been contaminated with salmonella bacteria. On Saturday, Mondelez International issued a similar recall for Ritz Crackers and Ritz Bits over salmonella-tainted whey.
Products affected by the Pepperidge Farms recall include:
- Flavor Blasted Xtra Cheddar
- Flavor Blasted Sour Cream & Onion
- Goldfish Baked with Whole Grain Xtra Cheddar
- Goldfish Mix Xtra Cheddar + Pretzel
Symptoms of salmonella include fever, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. The illness can lead to severe and sometimes life-threatening infections in children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems.
To date, no salmonella illnesses or other adverse events have been linked to the recall, the company said.
If you purchased any of the above items, you should throw them away or return them and get your money back.
